Ways to improve the performance of gear cutters

Cutting teeth may experience wear and tear, tool head detachment, tool head rupture, and other forms of failure during operation. Therefore, corresponding measures should be taken from design, manufacturing, and other aspects to address these issues.
1. In terms of design
According to the hardness index of coal rock layers, select alloy cutting heads of corresponding grades with targeted selection. Usually, for coal or semi coal rock tunnels with low cutting compressive strength, cutting heads with low Co content can be used. For all rock tunnels with high compressive strength, composite alloy materials with high Co content or advanced technologies such as spraying should be selected to improve impact resistance.
The tooth body is generally made of high-quality alloy structural steel with excellent forging performance, such as 35CrMnSi, 42CrMo, 40Cr, 35CrMnV, etc. The commonly used material in China is 35CrMnSi, which has a high fatigue limit and impact resistance after quenching and tempering. However, this material has obvious defects such as temper brittleness. Therefore, 42CrMo has been studied as a tooth material. Like 35CrMnSi, 42CrMo has high mechanical comprehensive performance after quenching and tempering, but no temper brittleness. Overall, 42CrMo is superior to 35CrMnSi and is more suitable as a cutting material.
2. In terms of manufacturing process
Strictly follow the design requirements to ensure the fit between the cutting teeth and the tooth seat, ensure that the cutting teeth can rotate freely in the tooth seat, avoid the occurrence of eccentric wear, achieve self grinding blade function, and maintain the sharpness of the cutting teeth. At this time, the wear of the cutting teeth is normal and uniform, in a good cutting state.
Adopting advanced brazing and heat treatment technologies. The brazing and heat treatment process of cutting teeth is one of the key technologies to ensure the quality of cutting teeth. In the mid to late 1990s, China began to study the integrated technology of brazing and heat treatment for hard alloy cutting teeth, using vacuum furnace heating to directly quench, brazing, and heat treat the brazed cutting teeth without air cooling. This new process can avoid the oxidation phenomenon caused by the contact between the brazing surface and air in the traditional process, ensuring that the melted brazing material is in direct contact with the brazing surface and guaranteeing the welding quality; At the same time, due to the completion of brazing and heat treatment in one heating, problems such as alloy embrittlement and reduced welding strength caused by two heating cycles are avoided.
Adopting the "three highs" process to improve the quality of hard alloys. The "Three Highs" process refers to the method of producing hard alloys using high-quality raw materials, high-purity tungsten powder, high-temperature reduction, and high-temperature carbonization. The hard alloy head material produced using the "three highs" process has the characteristics of uniform density, high wear resistance, and toughness.
As the cutting tool of the tunneling machine, the cutting teeth fail during the cutting process due to complex working conditions, resulting in a large consumption of cutting teeth. By controlling the above measures, the loss of cutting teeth can be reduced, the reliability of cutting teeth can be improved, and the efficiency of coal production can be further enhanced to meet the needs of high-yield and high-efficiency mine construction and development.
